Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine
Head of Laboratory: Associate Professor Donka Vassileva,M.D.PhD
Staff: Katerina Nikolova, MD
Mission: The laboratory performs highly specialized studies in the field of hematology. All types of nuclear-medical methods for the diagnosis of benignant and malignant hematological diseases are introduced.
Activities: The Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine is a part of the National Center of Hematology and Transfusiology that serves Sofia and the region, as well as patients who are referred to us throughout Bulgaria. Here we perform high quality nuclear studies of patients with different hematological diseases. The Laboratory carries out the following studies: 1. Nuclear studies in vivo ü Kinetics of 111-In oxine and 51-Cr labelled platelets - these methods are applied to the description of the platelet survival and sequestration, platelet turnover and recovery in different conditions of thrombopenia. ü Kinetics of 51-Cr labelled erythrocytes in peripheral blood - determination of erythrocytes survival, place of destruction, percentage of every day haemolysis in anaemic patients. ü Determination of the volume of circulating blood, plasma and erythrocyte masses by 51-Cr labelled erythrocytes. ü Kinetics of 111-In oxine labelled granulocytes - determination of intravascular survival and the distribution of labelled granulocytes in different organs. ü Tumor imaging - use of 67-Ga, 201-Tl, 99m-TcMIBI scintigraphy in diagnosis, prognosis and therapy control in patients with lymphoma.
2. Studies in vitro - radioimmunoassay for determination of: ü Vitamin B-12 and folic acid ü Ferritin ü Erythropoietin ü Beta-2 micro globulin ü Thymidine kinase
3. Miscellaneous studies ü Determination of plasma viscosity. ü Determination of haemopoietic stem cells in culture.
Facilities: ü The laboratory is well equipped with facilities for in vivo studies and facilities for in vitro studies. ü The laboratory is computerized and the results of the studies are kept in database.
